Oxfordshire councils welcome new government food labelling guidelines
Oxfordshire councils through Oxfordshire Waste Partnership (OWP) welcome the new government guidance on food date labels.
Confusion from the public around the sell by, best before and use by date labels on foods have been a source of confusion for many, and led to a massive amount of food ending up in the bin unnecessarily.
Paul Mocroft runs the Love Food Hate Waste campaign for OWP. He says: “We often talk to people who throw food away as soon as it’s past the sell by date when there’s nothing wrong with the food. Anything that makes it easier for the public to get the most out of their food and waste less is good for residents and good for councils.“
OWP chairman Lorraine Lindsay-Gale adds: “Even though we can recycle food waste in Oxfordshire it’s still better not to have so much in the first place. Less food in the bin means the public will save money on food bills and we’ll save money dealing with it.”
