Cheaper composting options

A brand new compost bin offer is now available to Oxfordshire residents and the prices just got cheaper.

Compost bin

Since 1999 over 48,000 compost bins have been bought across the county through cut price council schemes and this new offer helps build on that impressive figure with bins from just £18.50 including delivery. (A 220 litre bin costs £13.50 + £5 delivery. A 330 litre bin costs £16.50 + £5 delivery.)

The deal sees Oxfordshire councils, through Oxfordshire Waste Partnership (OWP), team up with bin manufacturer Straight Plc to provide compost bins, and for the first time water butts.

Oxfordshire’s residents have been actively encouraged to compost their garden waste for many years, and Waste Reduction Officer at the county council Eiles Robinson is passionate about getting people composting. “We want to make sure residents have the best bargain bins we can find,” says Eiles. “But more than that we want to make sure people are supported too. We have an excellent network of volunteer Master Composters who help others to get the best out of their compost bins and offer trouble shooting tips if people aren’t sure if they’re on the right track.”

Research by the Oxfordshire based Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), who ran the previous scheme, suggests that garden waste accounts for around 20% of household waste, with a further 17% of kitchen waste suitable for home composting.

OWP chairman, and successful home composter, Cllr John Tanner says: “It’s great that the public can now get even cheaper compost bins. At the time when Oxfordshire councils are either collecting or making preparations to collect food waste it’s still important to encourage people to compost at home. They will then be able to use their new council collections for foods that can’t be home composted such as meat, fish and cooked food.”
