Electronic Christmas cards reduce waste and save cash

With a massive one billion Christmas cards expected to be sent over the festive period there’s huge potential for lots of extra paper and card waste this year.
Oxfordshire Waste Partnership has stepped in to help reduce this waste by providing free electronic cards (eCards). Sending an eCard means sending the sentiment without the use of paper. Branded as ‘Rubbish Cards’, visitors to the OWP website can choose a simple static image or a fun animated card.
OWP chair Cllr John Tanner is passionate about reducing waste: “Recycling is important and we’ve all got targets to meet, but it’s more important not to produce the waste in the first place. If everyone in the county sends just a few eCards that would mean a significant reduction in Christmas waste.”
Paul Mocroft OWP communications officer will be sending Rubbish Cards himself this year. “We wanted the Rubbish Cards to be fun and easy to use to encourage people to make the change from the traditional Christmas card” Paul says. “If they’re successful we’ll be producing eCards for other special occasions such as birthdays or Valentines. Send free eCards to family, friends or colleagues by visiting www.oxfordshirewaste.gov.uk.”
