Which is the cleanest of them all?

Cherwell District Council and Banbury & District Chamber of Commerce are getting together to find out which is the cleanest school in Banbury.

The 2008 Cleanest School in Banbury Competition aims to encourage students to clean up their schools and at the same time make them more aware of the problems litter causes. It's a chance for students to appreciate how their actions can improve the environment and how they can take pride in and ownership of their schools.

With Cherwell District Council supporting the national Big Tidy Up campaign this September through Oxfordshire Waste partnership, timing is perfect for this, the third annual competition held between 8 September and 14 November.

Cherwell District Council's portfolio holder for community, health and environment, Councillor George Reynolds, said: "We know that if we get the anti-litter message through to people when they're young it's going to stay with them as they grow older. We're happy to be working together with the schools and Banbury & District Chamber of Commerce to make sure the message gets across."

Banbury & District Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Claire Kingsbury, said: "We're pleased to be working in conjunction with Cherwell District Council and hope, as we have in the last few years, to see the same fantastic efforts put in by schools and pupils alike. The anti litter message is important and one we like to support and encourage."

During the competition Cherwell District Council's street cleansing team will carry out unannounced inspections to check on the school grounds and surrounding area for cleanliness. The Chamber Cup will be awarded to the winning school which will also get a prize of vouchers worth £250 sponsored by Wellers Accountants.

The council will be providing litter pickers, bags and gloves to make sure that students are fully equipped to take part .
